Where can I find my instructor's contact information?
Student should use the Canvas Inbox to reach out to your instructor.
- Your Canvas Inbox is located in the left navigation menu.
- Your instructor will respond to you through the Canvas Inbox as well, so please check this often.
- Your instructor will typically respond within 24 to 48 hours, though this may be slightly longer over weekends or holidays.
Remember to use proper email etiquette when writing to your professor. Your messages will need to be polite, clear, and professional. Please wait at least a 24 hours before sending any subsequent chats, as this will give your professor time to respond to your request.
Instructor Office Hours
Many instructor may hold office hours on a weekly basis through virtual (video/audio) meetings. Office hours may also be available by appointment. Check the course announcements to find the office hours date/time, as well as procedures for accessing the office hours for this course.
Office Hours by Appointment
- Some instructors are willing to meet with students outside of their office hours or by appointment. If this is the case for your course, follow these procedures to request a meeting:
- A video conference must be scheduled ahead of time. Message your instructor at least 24 hours before your requested meeting time asking if they are available for a video conference. Provide 2 or 3 times and dates you are available to meet. Do not assume your instructor will be available at the time you requested.
- All video conference requests must be in CST.
- Your course instructor must confirm the conference time ahead of the conference. Do not send your instructor a video chat request on any platform. Your instructor must send you, the student, the link for the video conference.
- Office hours conference calls will need to be brief, aiming for 20 minutes or less when possible.
Preparing for Your Office Hours Video Conference
It is your responsibility, as the student, to keep track of this meeting invitation. Save this video link to your calendar.
- Be sure to check your Canvas Inbox for your office hours confirmation and meeting details.
- Please be prompt and prepared for your conference call. Have your questions prepared before the start of your conference. The questions must be content-specific to clarify the course content or to answer questions about a graded assignment.
- Above all, be respectful of your instructor. They are here to help you succeed.
