What should my testing environment look like before taking a proctored exam?

Step 1: Prepare Your Device & Testing Environment

  1. Choose a quiet, well-lit room with no distractions.
  2. Remove any unauthorized materials (notes, books, extra devices).
  3. Please double-check all Exam Expectation and Technology Requirements located in your Exam Module.
  4. Ensure your Laptop or Computer is plugged in or fully charged.
  5. Double-check your webcam, microphone, and internet are working properly with Honorlock downloaded and enabled.
Exam Start Page (with Honorlock Active)
On the last page of each exam module there will be the course's exam start page. This page shown below indicates the Honorlock Google Chrome extension is Active and Ready.
Once students agree to user agreement and terms of service this allows students to continue to through the Honorlock system's check and be admitted their exam through scanning a Valid government-issued or student ID.

*Attention* Honorlock may still need to be Properly Download or Enabled
If you see this screen asking for an “access code," this indicates Honorlock is NOT downloaded or enabled:
Steps to Activate Honorlock Before an Exam
To begin an exam, students must carefully read each page of the exam module guidelines to know what to expect during an Honorlock session. Taking these technology precautions before starting your next attempt may ensure your laptop or computer has the best connection possible:
  1. Check Your Device for any available Laptop or Computer Updates.
    • Disclaimer: Smartphones and tablets may not support all course activities, such as submitting assignments and completing quizzes or exams.

    • Download Google Chrome: Click here
    • Download Honorlock Extension: Click here

  2. If you already have Google Chrome Browser installed, check the “Update Required” message.
    • You can resolve any needed updates from the top-right corner (represented by three small dots) of your browser.

  3. Clearing the Cache in your browser history may resolve specific issues, such as loading or formatting problems on websites.

  4. Closed Interfering Applications: Please close unnecessary browser tabs and ensure that no background applications (such as file downloads, syncing services, cloud backups, or streaming apps) are running at the same time as the exam.
    • Disclaimer: Having too many tabs, browsers, or applications open will slow down the connection and is not allowed during exams.

  5. Temporarily Disable Any Unnecessary Extensions: Some extensions (especially browser-based ones) may interfere with Canvas or the Honorlock monitoring system.
    • If you see this screen asking for an “access code”, as seen below, it indicates Honorlock is NOT downloaded or enabled:
  6. Ensure Honorlock is fully active and no conflicting extensions are enabled.
    • To verify this, please see the steps below:
    • In the Google Chrome search bar, type chrome://extensions and hit enter.
    • Review the full list of your extensions.
    • Disable all non-essential or unauthorized extensions. They may be preventing Honorlock from staying enabled.
  7. Please carefully read the guidelines and expectations listed in your exam module. These include essential reminders like:
  8. Academic Integrity Disclaimer: Students are expected to adhere to our Proctoring Rules and Requirements; otherwise, the exam session may be automatically flagged for further academic review.
    • All official letters regarding academic misconduct and warnings in our courses are thoroughly reviewed.
    • Students who may have been flagged for academic integrity concerns will be officially notified via email by our team at Instructionalservices@tel-education.org for our records.

  9. Lastly, in Canvas students must navigate to the last page of their exam module to see the active Honorlock system's check page. All exams are required to be proctored using one of the available methods based on your student enrollment type:
    • Online Monitored Exams: Most students will need to continue through to the Honorlock system's check to be admitted into online monitored exams by successfully scanning a valid government-issued -OR- student ID for the identity verification process. No exam password or code is required for online exams using Honorlock.
    • Approved In-person Proctoring: Students who enrolled through your school may contact their in-person teacher or administrator to inquire about the availability of this proctoring method. Meaning if your schooling is not fully remote, you may reach out to your school about the option to schedule exams ahead of time with your teacher.
      • Skips ID Requirement: This also allows students to skip the valid ID requirement by having an authorized school administrator request an Honorlock Bypass PIN from support@tel-education.org to oversee their exam in person, rather than using the online monitoring system.
For further troubleshooting assistance, please share a screenshot of the error or a brief description with support@tel-education.org as soon as possible.

Step 2: Start the Room Scan

  1. Follow the on-screen prompts to begin.
  2. Slowly rotate your webcam or laptop to show:
    1. Your desk
    2. The floor
    3. The surrounding area
    4. If using an external webcam or laptop, pick it up to scan your space.

Step 3: Avoid Common Issues

  1. Move slowly to prevent a blurry scan.
  2. Show the entire workspace, including the desk, walls, and floor.
  3. If your scan is rejected, follow the feedback provided and try again.
    1. A Honorlock Support team member may pop-in to check to initiate the exam.
    2. Alternative Scan: Students may also use a QR code provided by Honorlock at the time of the exam and that allows the student to scan from a secondary device to upload an image of their government-issued or student ID. Whereas, any secondary devices are strictly prohibited after this verification check.
      1. This method can be used to verify your identity with Honorlock and gain admission to an exam. It is done using the three little dots on the ID verification page in Honorlock.
  4. Here is a guide on using the QR code or uploading an image options: https://honorlock.kb.help/how-to-complete-id-verification/
  5. Honorlock accepts most government-issued IDs, such as driver's licenses, passports, or student IDs that include a photo, as part of our Proctoring Rules and Requirements for all course exams.
    1. If students do not have a valid ID, our TEL support team may need to arrange an alternative verification method to ensure that Honorlock permits this exception.
  6. Important Reminders During Exams:
    1. Well-Lit Environment: Ensure your testing area is well-lit so your webcam feed is clear throughout the exam duration.
    2. Stable Internet Connection: Check your internet connection for stability to avoid any interruptions.
    3. Quiet and Secure Setting: Confirm that your surroundings are quiet and disruptions-free. Just to remind you, background noise should be minimal.
    4. Webcam Placement: Your face must remain visible in the webcam view at all times.
    5. Avoid Background Distractions: Make sure your testing environment is quiet and free from visual distractions.
    6. Please note background noise, conversations, or visible posters and photos may cause interruptions during your exam.
    7. Stay on the Exam Screen: Please only navigate away from or close the exam window once you have fully completed your test.
Important Disclaimer: The Honorlock monitoring system may pause or flag your session until all testing environment guidelines are met.

Step 4: Complete the Honorlock Online System Check

  1. Once accepted, you may proceed with your exam.
Important Disclaimer: The Honorlock Chrome extension must be enabled on your device to activate the exam page & online system's check, as seen below.

  1. If you have issues staying connected during an exam, immediately try refreshing your exam page to see if this resolves the any connections issues. You may also try restarting your browser, clearing your cache, and the Steps to Activate Honorlock to resume your exam.
  2. All exams are timed. If you accidentally exit after starting an exam the counter will NOT be paused.
  3. Please reconnect/resume with Honorlock active as soon as possible to submit your all your work.
