Why Is My Assignment or Module Locked?

Why Is My Assignment or Module Locked?

Welcome to your Canvas course(s)! To ensure a smooth and successful online learning experience, it is important to follow the recommended methods for accessing your course materials and completing the required activities. This guide will help you understand best practices and how to resolve issues related to locked assignments or modules.

Your course’s Home page is designed to provide easy access to all course materials and required activities. Follow these steps to navigate through all necessary course materials:

  1. Start Here Tab:

    • Navigate to the bottom of you course’s Home page.
    • Beginning from Start Here.
    • This section provides an overview of your course's structure and details important resources needed.
    • Progressing through each corresponding button in an orderly fashion.
  2. Modules Navigation Menu:

    • The Modules navigation menu includes buttons for each module as well as exams.
    • Each module provides access to all necessary materials, including readings, quizzes, discussions, and Check Your Knowledge (CYK) activities.
  3. Complete All Items:

    • Make sure to navigate through each tab and complete all items within the module to proceed to the next one.
    • Skipping an item could prevent you from unlocking subsequent modules or assignments.
    • Note: The Syllabus Quiz is a common requirement that must be completed before you can start Module 1 and unlock subsequent assignments. If you are having issues with this, refer to our article on resolving Syllabus Quiz issues here.
  4. Check Your Progress:

    • Regularly check your progress to ensure you are on track.
    • Use the Grades tab to review completed items, scores, and assignment feedback.

Caution Against Skipping Directly to an Assignment

While Canvas provides direct access to assignments and rubrics, it is not the recommended method for navigating your course. Here’s why:

  • Bypassing Required Activities: This may cause students to bypass other essential instructions or required activities, such as discussions posts or quizzes, which are necessary to unlock future modules and assignments.
  • Incomplete Course Progress: To progress forward, students must view the associated pages for full context of each module’s requirements.
