Navigating Your Canvas Course Effectively

Navigating Your Canvas Course Effectively

Welcome to your course(s) on Canvas! To ensure a smooth and successful learning experience, it is crucial to navigate through your course using the recommended methods. This guide will help you understand the best practices for accessing course materials and completing required activities.

The Course Home Page is designed to provide easy access to all course materials and required activities. Follow these steps to navigate effectively:

  1. Start Here Tab:

    • First start by navigating to your course's Home
    • Click on   this section provides an overview of the course structure and important documents for your course.
  2. Modules Navigation Menu:

    • The course Home page features a built-in Modules navigation menu that includes buttons for each module, as well as exams.
      • *Located on the bottom of each course home page*
    • Each module button provides access to all necessary materials, including readings, quizzes, discussions, and CYK (Check Your Knowledge) activities.
  3. Complete All Items:

    • Ensure you navigate through each tab and complete all items within the module to proceed to the next one.
    • Be thorough and attentive to detail, as skipping any item might hinder your progress and prevent unlocking subsequent modules or assignments.
  4. Check Progress:

    • Regularly check your progress to ensure you are on track.
    • Use the Grades tab to review your completed items, scores, and assignment feedback.

Caution Against Using the "Assignments" Tab

While the Assignments tab on the left-hand side menu of your Canvas course provides access to your assignments and rubrics, it is not the recommended method for all course navigation. Here’s why:

  • Bypassing Required Activities: Using the Assignments tab may cause you to bypass other essential directions or required activities, such as discussions, which are necessary to unlock the next modules or corresponding course material.
  • Incomplete Course Progress: Relying solely on the Assignments tab can result in incomplete course progress, as it does not provide the full context of each module's requirements on one page.
