What is a Case Study for Psychology?

A case study is a specific type of research paper traditionally used in psychology, sociology, or anthropology that focuses specifically on one person/patient or one group of people.

A case study is typically made up of these sections:

  1. Summary - In the summary, explain exactly what the study will focus on and examine.  By the end of the summary, state a central idea or a thesis statement that the case study will surround.

  2. Background -  This section will include some information about the history of your patient, the symptoms he/she has experienced, and any other relevant facts necessary for the proper diagnosis and treatment plan.  Specify the issue or problem the patient is experiencing.

  3. Literature Review -  Research and report on previous cases with similar concerns, symptoms, history, etc.  Report on what these cases found and how this information will inform your case study.

  4. Proposed Solutions - This is the proposed treatment plan for your patient.  Present realistic, usable ways to help solve the problem.  Offer evidence to support your reasoning.

  5. Conclusion/Implementation - Briefly summarize the main points of the case study.  Explain why this choice for treatment is appropriate.  Explain what changes may occur or side effects to be aware of.

  6. APA Reference Page/Works Cited - Provide a list of all references cited throughout the case study.  Be sure to use APA format.  For more information about generating citations using APA, click here.

Throughout the Principles of Psychology course, you will work step by step to research and write a completed case study.  This case study will include all of the steps listed above.

The reason each Mastery Assignment is written on one document is because you are building a completed Case Study.

  • First, identify and discuss the patient’s history, the mental illness, symptoms, and disruptions the patient may encounter in their day-to-day lives.  This is completed in Mastery Assignment 1.

  • Next, dive deeper into the research.  Write a literature review to support your diagnosis of your patient, proper treatment, and other impacts your patient may need to overcome.  This is done in Mastery Assignment 2.

  • Finally, develop a psychological treatment plan for your patient.  Compile the necessary information and research to help your patient.  This is completed in Mastery Assignment 3.
