This is where a majority of your information is presented.  Be sure to include information about the significance of the functional music to your prospective career, highlight the innovations and discoveries in this style of functional music, and discuss modern applications of this style of functional music.   Be sure to include at least three examples showing how this style of functional music is used today.

When writing your essay, consider answering the following questions:

  • What is the main problem this style of functional music is attempting to solve?

    • For example, if your topic is “What is the importance of classical music on students’ mental health?”, explain what mental health concerns students face in school.

    • Explain who is impacted by the issue or problem.  In this example, the students who suffer from mental health concerns would be at risk.

    • Explain why this topic is important or why someone should be interested in your topic.  In this example, students, parents, and teachers should all be interested in helping students find success by conquering their mental health concerns.

  • Briefly summarize the history of the type of music your topic focuses on.

    • For example, in the previous example, the essay will focus on classical music; therefore, the brief history of music will focus solely on classical music.

  • How is this example of functional music connected to your prospective profession?

    • For example, the idea of assisting students’ mental health can be related to the field of education and teaching.  Helping students through music therapy or to manage ADHD or Autism are direct applications of classical music and why it’s important to play in a classroom setting.
