How do I write an introduction for a Cause and Effect essay?

What information do I need in the introduction of a Cause and Effect essay?

The introduction not only introduces your ideas and claims to the audience, but it also is a great way to connect with your audience.  It can draw your reader into your essay by creating a sense of wonder or curiosity about the information to come.

While this is a suggestion, most well-written introduction paragraphs include variations of this information.  Here is a list of information needed to create an interesting and effective introduction paragraph.
  • A Hook: In this essay, you will need to capture the reader’s attention with an interesting hook.  If you need more information on writing a hook, read the article "How do I write a hook?".

  • Background information: Provide any necessary background information the reader will need in order to understand the claims you are supporting in your essay.  Think of this as the “what” questions or the “when” questions.

  • Powerful thesis statement present that effectively identifies the main points the essay will explore.

  • Thesis Statement: A thesis statement is the “road map” of the entire essay.  This statement tells the readers the main concept of the essay.  This concept is supported by three reasons or claims.  Here are two sentence frames to use when constructing your thesis statement. While it is not required to use this exact formula, it is a great place to begin drafting ideas for your thesis statement.

    • Thesis Statement Frame Choices:

      • ___ caused ____ to happen because of ____, ____ and ____.

      • ___ effected ____ because of ___, ___ and ___.
