How do I write an introduction for the Music Appreciation Essay?

Music Appreciation Mastery Assignment 2 Essay - Introduction

After establishing your thesis statement, conducting a brainstorming session, and writing an outline for your essay, it is now time to start drafting your essay.  Your essay will include three main sections: the introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion.  This article establishes the requirements for the introduction paragraph.

Introduction Paragraph

The purpose of an introduction paragraph is to establish the necessary background knowledge a reader will need to understand before reading the bulk of your essay.  The information presented here should establish a sense of curiosity in your reader.  Capture the reader’s attention by using an interesting “hook” at the start of your paragraph.  The middle of this section should include necessary background information about the chosen topic.  This information should include how the field was established, types of music/artists/instruments used in this style of music, and establish who has made a lasting impression in the field.

Your introduction can include

  • An interesting “hook”

  • Background information

    • Brief summary of music as it relates to your chosen topic.

    • Highlight major innovations about the music in your chosen topic.

  • Thesis statement

    • Focus on why this is an important tool to use

    • Benefits of using this style of functional music
