How do I write a thesis statement for an evaluation essay?

The thesis statement will include the author’s opinion on the selected work (the book, movie, artist, etc.), and three specific criteria or reasons to support the given opinion.


  • Format

[Subject] is [Evaluation] because [Road Map: Reason 1, Reason 2, and Reason 3] 


  • Format:

Although [subject] is ineffective because of [negative comment], it remains a strong [media genre] because [Road Map: Reason 1, Reason 2, and Reason 3.]


  • An example of a specific claim is: “The movie Toy Story 4 was the most entertaining film for both children and adults because it is heartwarming, funny and well animated.” In this example, this claim is the thesis for the paper. 


When writing the thesis statement, be sure to choose strong words to evaluate the selected work.  Avoid using words like “good”, “great”, “famous” or “amazing” as the qualifying trait for your selected work.
