How do I write a thesis statement for a rhetorical analysis?

A strong thesis statement for a rhetorical analysis should serve as a guide for the reader for the remainder of the essay, assert the writer’s conclusion about the article, and take a stand on the author’s rhetorical strategies. It should state what techniques will be analyzed, and the impact of these techniques on the effectiveness of the text.


The purpose of this essay is to determine if the author was successful in their efforts.  In order to set up the argument in your paper, this template may be used to format the thesis statement.

For example:

  3. Glenn uses the rhetorical appeals of pathos and ethos effectively. However, his use of unsupported logical appeals causes his readers to doubt that his claim is supported by research.
