How do I take notes in a college course?

Here are four methods for taking notes during a TEL Education course:

Outline Note-Taking Strategy - This method for taking notes during your course requires the use of numbers, letters, bullet points, and indentations.  This style of note-taking shows a distinction between the main point of the lesson and the subtopics or subcategories.  It may be helpful to color-code when taking notes using an outline.  Click here for more information about the outline method of note-taking.

Cornell Note-Taking Strategy - In this strategy, split the paper into three sections - 2 columns and 1 row.  The first column will show the main point or learning outcome of the lesson.  The second column is a place for notes, key-words, important supporting ideas or questions you have about the material.  The row at the bottom is used to write a brief summary.  Spend a few minutes at the end of the lesson or module to review the material by writing a brief summary of the information. Mindmap Note-Taking Strategy - This style of note-taking is also known as an idea web, where the main idea or point of the lesson is written in the center of the page, and the subtopics or sub-ideas branch out from the center point.  Be sure to use a separate mind map for each lesson.  This style of note-taking has a tendency to take up a lot of room on a page, so be sure to leave enough space for all of the necessary information.

Sketch Notes Strategy - In this method, visual cues are used throughout the notes to enhance the notes.  This method can help students plan, read, process the information, and, of course, draw.  Be sure to leave the extra room, as these notes can take up a great deal of space on a page.  For more information, click this link to learn more about sketch note-taking.
