How do I take effective notes?

Effective note-taking skills will help you process information so that you can better understand and retain the course material. Please keep in mind that there is no “best method of note-taking,” rather the method that makes the most sense to you. However, there are certain traits that good note-taking skills have in common. These include:
  1. Organization: whether you organize by color, alphabetically, or with placement, aesthetics can contribute to material remembrance.
  2. Concise: include material with significance rather than every detail.
  3. Comprehensible: write clearly and only use abbreviations that you’ll remember.  Take note of meaningful self and world connections you are making.
  4. Engagement:  identify a time of the day when you are more focused and limit distractions.  Silence your cell phone or place it in another room if possible to limit temptation.
