How do I analyze a quote?

How do I analyze a quote?

Analyzing a quote in your own words is a matter of connecting the quote to the overall claim and applying it to the main point of the body paragraph.  The general rule is to make the claim, support the claim, then analyze it in your own words.

For example:

“Childhood obesity is caused by bad dietary habits learned from the parents, “parents are a contributing factor in which children base their own habits as they develop into adults” (Smith).  If parents are the models of behavior, then the dietary lifestyle in which they impart to their children begins a cycle as those children impart to future generations.”

As portrayed here, the overall claim is that a factor for childhood obesity is learned by parents, which is then supported by a quotation from a resource.  The last sentence ties the concept together into the general main point of the paragraph.
